Aronia Berry: The New Superfruit

Six out of ten global consumers are in search of food and beverage products that support immune health according to Innova Market Insight’s Consumer Survey 2020. This means that there is and will be continued demand for superfoods, which have been trending in recent years for being nutrient-rich. As consumers are exploring new foods and growing increasingly health conscious at the same time, there has been increased interest in exotic fruits and vegetables – especially those with certain health properties that boost the immune system. The majority of consumers are on the lookout for foods that naturally contain health benefits, so it is no surprise that superfoods, which are often touted for their potential health properties, are on the rise. One of these newly defined superfoods is the Aronia Berry. Native to North America, this berry is grown on a bush and can be found from the Midwest all the way to the East Coast. This berry has been around for centuries and is finally getting noticed for its health benefits and flavor. The steady increase in popularity is bringing more room for innovation among the better-for-you food segments.

Also known as chokeberry, this superfood was commonly used by Native Americans as a staple in their diets. There are multiple varieties of Aronia; they range in color from black to red and purple. The color of the berry identifies the region in which it is grown. Black Aronia berry is the most well-known variety, found in Canada and the Eastern U.S. All species are planted during the spring, but black Aronia berry is the first to become ripe, in mid-to-late summer. Its flavor profile delivers on tartness and dryness with earthy undertones – perfect for consumers who are looking for those foods that make your mouth pucker.

Aronia berry is known to have significantly more antioxidants than most fruit including blueberries and even elderberries. Not only does the berry boost immunity, but it has many other properties that are believed to potentially help with various medical conditions. With high levels of antioxidants and potential health benefits, multiple studies have indicated that consumption of the Aronia berry has a direct effect on human health. Currently, researchers are looking into Aronia’s impact on cognitive function – aligning with Mintel’s 2021 global trend, “Feed the Mind.”

Aronia equals innovation – with a small number of products released in the past few years, it can expand into different categories. To start, it can be consumed as a raw berry and would be a great dry berry addition to a snack nut mix. Over the past few years, convenience has been key with many consumers. Ready-to-drink beverages can bring consumers healthy nutrients in an accessible way. Utilizing Aronia in these beverages delivers health benefits and delicious flavor conveniently. Currently, the ready-to-drink market is soaring with numerous new product releases. The innovation doesn’t stop there – from using it in gummies and baby food to creating ice cream flavors, the berry can be a great addition to your products. Striving for creativity within your products? Aronia is perfect to introduce a new and flavorful ingredient! Not only is Aronia right on trend, but it also has versatility across multiple food categories. Aronia’s added health benefits and a delicious tart flavor will have consumers craving more.
