With 2021 just around the corner, we’re looking ahead at the ethnic flavors and spice blends that will be on the rise. As consumers continue to cook at home, they’ll be looking to step outside their comfort zones and try new and exciting flavors, as well as attempt to recreate classic ethnic dishes that they’d typically order at restaurants. This ultimately will accelerate the already prolific ethnic food and flavor trend. You’ll find some familiar favorites on this list, as well as some new flavors that are sure to be a hit with adventurous consumers.
From Africa & the Middle East
Dukkah – A seed and spice blend from Egypt, dukkah is as aromatic as it is flavorful. With coriander and cumin, dukkah is traditionally used as a dip, but its flavor profile also translates well in other categories, like bakery.
Berbere – Berbere brings the heat! This classic Ethiopian spice blend features ginger, turmeric, chili peppers, and more alluring spices. While it is typically used in a range of African dishes, including doro wat, expect to see it on snacks and in sauces.
Za’atar – A mixture of savory herbs, spices, and seeds, za’atar hails from the Mediterranean region of the Middle East. It has many uses too; try it in snacks, proteins, bakery, and more for a truly delicious seasoning.
Zhug – Zhug has been making waves in the past year or so as it has gained traction in foodservice and retail. A spicy green condiment, zhug is typically used as a sauce for proteins. Its flavor profile, however, translates exceptionally well to snacks, side dishes, and vegetables.
From the Caribbean & Latin America
Tempero Baiano – Originating from Brazil, tempero baiano delivers on complex spiciness! This spice blend features garlic, cayenne, oregano, and more warm and alluring spices. And talk about versatile! Not only does it make for a craveable meat rub, but it also is perfect for soups, stews, vegetables and snacks.
Jerk – This one’s a classic! Also known as rasta spice, jerk is common in the Caribbean and delivers heat with tropical flair. The possibilities are endless too – from sauces to meats to snacks, jerk can make any dish or product delicious.
Tajin – Citrus is in these days and tajin delivers on that! Featuring lime and chilies, tajin is moderately spicy and completely delicious. Add it to beverages, proteins, or even snacks to take them to the next level.
From Asia
Furikake – With seaweed, spices, and sesame seeds, this Japanese seasoning blend is becoming a new favorite among Millennials and Gen Zers. Sprinkle it on just about anything!
Gochujang – Another one that brings the heat, Korean gochujang has been trending in the past couple of years. An added bonus? It is fermented, offering a delicious sour flavor that consumers will totally crave. It delivers the “wow” factor for snacks and condiments alike.
Chili Crunch – This Chinese condiment features chili flakes, sesame seeds, and spices in oil. It makes for an exciting sauce, dip, or even flavor profile for snacks.
From Europe
Ajvar – Made from roasted peppers and eggplant, ajvar is a classic condiment in Serbian cuisine that is now beginning to rise in popularity around the world. Commonly used as a spread, its flavor profile translates well to a variety of other applications, including dips, snacks, and more.
