Certified Organic Flavors Deadline

The deadline is quickly approaching for the National Organic Program’s (NOP’s) requirement to use organic flavors when commercially available. The NOP published a final rule earlier this year that amended the National List of Allowed and Prohibited Substances.  Certified organic products using natural flavors under the 95 percent rule need to be re-evaluated using organic certified flavors or collect documentation that its needed flavor is not commercially available. The deadline for implementation is December 27, 2019.

Congress to Finally Vote on USMCA Trade Agreement

On December 10th, House Democrats reached a compromise with President Trump on the updated trade agreement with the United States, Mexico, and Canada. Last year, the three countries signed the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) designed to replace the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). Both the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives must now vote to ratify the agreement.

FDA Issues Warnings to 15 CBD Companies

On November 25th, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued 15 warning letters to cannabidiol (CBD) companies and published an update for consumers of safety concerns with CBD products. In this notice, the FDA declared it cannot recognize CBD as generally recognized as safe (GRAS) for use in human or animal food.  Read more here.
